Celebrating Milestones, Noticing People

This time of year, many families are celebrating graduations, endings, and new beginnings. There are ceremonies, photos, family gatherings, and proud moments as students walk across stages and step into a new season.

For refugee and immigrant families, these milestones can carry even deeper meaning. A child graduating from school may represent years of perseverance, language learning, sacrifice, adjustment, and hope for the future.

Recently, I thought about one Afghan refugee family in our community who has two children graduating this year. What a beautiful opportunity to reach out with kindness, celebrate with them, and let them know they are seen and valued.

Sometimes friendship begins with something as simple as noticing.

I was reminded of this again when I saw a few Muslim women from English class working at Walmart. When they saw me, they were so happy to stop, smile, and greet me. It was such a small moment, but it felt meaningful. It reminded me that friendship often grows through ordinary places, ordinary greetings, and ordinary kindness.

We do not always need a big event or a perfect plan to begin building friendship. Sometimes we simply need eyes to see the people God has placed in our path.

A graduation card.
A kind text.
A warm greeting in the store.
A few words of encouragement.
A moment to rejoice with someone who is rejoicing.

Romans 12:15 says,

“Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”

This is a beautiful invitation for us as followers of Jesus. We can be women who notice both joy and sorrow. We can celebrate milestones, honor perseverance, and step toward our Muslim neighbors with genuine kindness.

This week, let’s ask God to open our eyes to the Muslim women and families around us, especially those walking through seasons of transition, celebration, or need.

Prayer Request

Pray for Muslim refugee and immigrant families whose children are graduating this season. Pray that they would feel encouraged, honored, and supported. Ask God to give Christian women eyes to notice these moments and hearts ready to respond with friendship, kindness, and genuine celebration.

Prayer

Lord, open our eyes to the people You have placed around us. Help us notice moments of joy, transition, and celebration in the lives of Muslim women and families. Give us courage to reach out with kindness, to celebrate their milestones, and to build friendships that reflect Your love. May even simple greetings and small acts of care become open doors for deeper relationship. Amen.
