Start with Prayer: Preparing Our Hearts for Say Hello Summer
Summer has a way of inviting us outside.
We walk a little more slowly. We sit on porches. We visit parks, farmers markets, coffee shops, festivals, and neighborhood gatherings. We notice flowers blooming, children playing, families traveling, and people lingering a little longer in ordinary places.
For Say Hello, summer can also become a beautiful season of intentional noticing.
Before we fill the calendar with activities, recipes, outings, and gatherings, we want to begin in the right place.
We begin with prayer.
Prayer Is a Faithful Beginning
Prayer is not a small beginning. It is a faithful one.
Before we know who we might meet, what we might say, or how a friendship might begin, we can ask God to open our eyes. We can ask Him to make us aware of the people already around us. We can ask Him to give us His heart for Muslim women and families in our neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, communities, and cities.
Sometimes we imagine that cross-cultural friendship begins with a big event or a perfect plan. But often, it begins much more simply.
A smile.
A greeting.
A walk through the neighborhood.
A conversation at the grocery store.
An invitation for tea.
A willingness to learn.
This summer, our prayer is simple:
Lord, open our eyes.
Open our eyes to the woman we pass often but have never greeted.
Open our eyes to the family new to our community.
Open our eyes to the neighbor who may feel unseen.
Open our eyes to opportunities for kindness, welcome, and friendship.
Begin Where You Are
One of the most encouraging things about friendship is that it does not always require a big beginning.
You can start by taking a prayer walk through your neighborhood. You can pray as you drive to work, shop for groceries, or sit in a coffee shop. You can ask God to help you notice the people you often pass by without seeing.
The Say Hello Summer Bucket List includes simple ideas like prayer walking, inviting someone for coffee or tea, learning greetings in new languages, and creating a welcoming space in your home. But before any of those things become activities, they can become prayers.
Lord, help me notice.
Lord, make me available.
Lord, teach me to welcome.
Lord, give me courage to say hello.
A Prayer for the Start of Summer
As May comes to a close and summer begins, let’s start here:
Lord, open our eyes this summer. Help us notice the people around us. Give us courage to say hello, humility to learn, and love that reflects Jesus. Show us simple ways to welcome, pray, listen, and build friendship. Amen.
Say Hello Summer is coming.
Let’s begin with prayer.
