Back to School, Back to Friendship
The start of a new school year brings sharpened pencils, fresh notebooks, and children buzzing with anticipation. But beyond the lessons and homework, school is also a place where hearts connect and friendships bloom.
For many of us, this season is a gentle reminder: God places people in our path for a reason. And often, those people include Muslim classmates and their families. What an opportunity for us to notice, welcome, and befriend them!
Why School Can Be a Bridge
Playgrounds, hallways, and soccer fields connect children in ways that break down barriers. Kids are often quick to laugh together, play together, and make friends. As parents and grandparents, we can step into that space too—with small gestures that open doors for lasting relationships.
“A smile at pickup, a kind word in the hallway, or an invitation to a playdate can be the first step toward a lifelong friendship.”
Muslim families who are new to a community—or even new to the country—may feel the same jitters that our own children do on the first day of school. A little kindness from us can go a long way in easing those nerves and helping them feel at home.
Simple Ways to Say Hello This Fall
Start with a smile. A warm “hello” in the drop-off line or at a school event communicates openness.
Invite connection. Suggest coffee after school drop-off or a playdate at the park.
Learn a phrase. Try saying As-salamu alaykum (peace be upon you). Even a small effort shows care and respect.
Share your traditions. Invite a Muslim family to join in an autumn activity—pumpkin carving, apple picking, or sharing soup on a cool evening. These simple experiences build beautiful memories.

A Season to Plant Seeds
Autumn reminds us of harvest—but before the fruit, there are seeds. This school season is our chance to plant seeds of kindness, hospitality, and love. We may not see the fruit right away, but every small hello is a seed God can grow.
So as your children step into classrooms, may your family also step into friendship—eyes wide open to the neighbors God has placed right beside you.
